Don’t Watch the News

You learn in personal development that life is a journey, not a destination.

We have an expression in our personal development community about CNN. We call it Constant Negative News. The vast majority of the world believes they have to be informed in order to have conversations with people about the topic of the day. In taking a close look at this I see this just developing one negative thought after another. First we get the negative information from the news broadcast then we carry that on in our head and with other people the rest of the day.

When I first got involved in personal development I fought not watching the news for awhile since I was kind of a news junky. But it soon became clear to me and one of the comments I read really assisted me. Think of your mind as a bank account and for every negative thought you have take out a dollar and for every positive thought deposit a dollar. Now at the end of the day, what does your bank account look like? If I choose to continue to watch the news how many dollars would I have to remove from my bank account?

Personal development is our business and our life,

I am a former CEO of a company and then owned my own consulting business. Over 9 years ago I made the decision that even though I was making that 6 figure income, I was not happy. I had a beautiful piece of property on Lake Conroe and a wonderful wife and I was never here to enjoy both. I had to find a way to stay home. I got involved in numerous multilevel marketing (MLM) programs and quite honestly lost a lot of money. A personal development company found me. Thank God it did. I am now able to be at home as much as I choose and truly enjoy the lifestyle I now have. Their program has taught me that I have the power to create anything in my life. And in fact we're now traveling all around California, staying on the beach to the mountains. This business is so portable, you just need the internet and a cell phone.

    Hy Michael,

There´s so much negative stuff going on at the moment that you can´t focus on all that bullshit. Of course we should accpet the way things are but it doesn´t make it any better when we just listening and bein attached to that stuff all the time. We can´t change it.

We should focus on the positive things that help us growth and motivate us.

I wasn’t raised on cable television and we’ve never connected our TVs to the local news stations either. I occasionally do check my local stations’ websites to see what’s going on in my immediate area, but other than that I feel as though most news is just a bunch of gossip. I’ve never really had much use for it, and whenever I’ve watched it in the past, I usually came away discouraged or worried over some situation that didn’t even affect me.

    Hi Michael,
I stopped watching the news years ago, right after I read that 5 mins negativity stays in your subconscious for 23 hours. WOW!

    Thanks for sharing this post.

    Keep smiling

    Chris :)

Yes Janine we have a lady in our business that was a reporter and tells very similar stories of them trying to sensationalize everything by providing bogus filming and etc. She could not stand it any more. Thanks for your comments.

I love the bank account analogy Michael, and I agree that there is nothing good about the news. I have found that I am better off without it.

  32. Janine June 18, 2010 7:23 pm #

Hi Michael, couldn’t agree more with your post. I stopped watching the news 21 years ago now after visitng Fiji during the Rambuka coup and then coming home and seeing what was being put to air here in Aussie on the news. I also spoke to reporters in Fiji who confirmed that the news video footage we saw here was not even footage of Fijians in Fiji but footage from elsewhere in the world. I was so disgusted because I thought that news was supposed to be factual at that stage. I turned it off then and haven’t turned it on since! Who needs to be depressed by “bad news” which it always is, that isn’t even real or is only partly real!
I’d suggest to everyone turn of the news and send the industry a message that we don’t want it or at least want a much better and more factual quality of presentation.
    Thanks for your post!!!

Count me in an that one Michael. I last watched TV about 5 years ago, I have said enough! True story: I have only watched 2 DVD’s in all that time. Unbeaten and Kids with Cameras! The expansion into a life full of time and creative endeavours is what is given over for, lazy, thoughtless relaxation and conforming affirmations. Once I sat in the street where I lived and I could see the strobe of the TV’s illuminating the windows and curtains. With freakish synchronicity homes flickered simultaneously. A few houses on this channel, a few on that one but no one thinking for themselves, drones. I remember thinking was this a scene from a sci-fi movie? People actually believe they need this stuff in their being!! There is a channel, we create the broadcast and we are the only one to receive it. Live a life brimming with original moments.

  35. Edward June 17, 2010 7:54 pm #

I totally agree Michael! We get what we put in our brains and our body.
I am thankful that I have broken the habit of TV and do not have much use for it these days with the exception of movies with my wife and daughter.

    Make it a great day!
    God Bless,
    -ed
