Burning Desire

You learn in personal development that life is a journey, not a destination.

It’s been stated that only 3% of network marketers are successful. Why is this success rate is so low as compared to other businesses, or is it?

It’s not just in network marketing that people are failing. In my opinion to be thought of as being successful in any business you have to be making at least $200k per year (not the old $100k). If you look at the US, the 2007 statistic are that only 2.67% of the people are making over $200k. Now let’s look at entrepreneurs in brick and mortar businesses. For those businesses having less than 20 employees only 9% survive 10 years or more. Bottom line, being an entrepreneur is easier than you think, but and here’s the big but. People fail or give up because they do not have an absolute burning desire to succeed. If they did, they would never give up. They would rather go back to their comfort zone, job and etc. In Personal Development there are Five Keys to Burning the Boats Are You Burning Your Boats?

For me my burning desire was not to have to go back to a job again. I had made it to what most people believe to be the pinnacle of success, the CEO of a major corporation. I was making a multiple 6 figure income, but was never home. I had no time freedom to spend with my wife. So since I made it to the top and  saw what it looked like, there was nowhere else to go but become an entrepreneur.

What is your burning desire?

Personal development is our business and our life,

I am a former CEO of a company and then owned my own consulting business. Over 9 years ago I made the decision that even though I was making that 6 figure income, I was not happy. I had a beautiful piece of property on Lake Conroe and a wonderful wife and I was never here to enjoy both. I had to find a way to stay home. I got involved in numerous multilevel marketing (MLM) programs and quite honestly lost a lot of money. A personal development company found me. Thank God it did. I am now able to be at home as much as I choose and truly enjoy the lifestyle I now have. Their program has taught me that I have the power to create anything in my life. And in fact we're now traveling all around California, staying on the beach to the mountains. This business is so portable, you just need the internet and a cell phone.

That’s it exactly Mike. It’s far easier to give up when your desire and belief is not strong enough. I always give an example that if you were told that there was $1 million under a bed in a 2,000 room hotel and you absolutely believed it and you were given the pass key to all the rooms. When would you give up looking.

    Thanks for your comments Mike,

    Michael

    Hey Michael!

This is where I think most people fail. There desire isn’t strong enough. They want to make a change, but most don’t want to put the effort it takes to make the change and see a better life. If your desire isn’t strong enough, you will struggle, then excuses and procrastination take over and the end result is not getting what you want. Make the desire strong enough and achievement is possible. Love your post!

    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi Micheal,
for me to allow myself to have a burning desire is my burning desire.
Until I was 7 years old I was being fostered out to 4 sets of foster parents, with my parents in between and I must have decided to not want anything, so I couldn’t be disappointed.
I learned to be content with what is, which is a good way to be, but…..
Regardless of all that my Life has been good.
In the last few years I have been aware of my pattern more consciously and have been working with it.

So here is to the burning desire!

    Thank you for your Post.

I love it Beth, stopped paying your pension. Years ago I took all the money out of my pension to keep going. I’ve gotten a lot higher return on my investment in me.

    Thanks for your comments,

Thanks Clare. I love your idea of to heighten the vibrational energy. That’s a terrific mission and you’re right we can do more together than separately it just raises the positive energy even more than double.

    Thanks again,

    Michael,

Our burning desire is to be able to work where we want, when we want… and to have the freedom to spend time with each other and our family.

Our family is number 1… as it seems so is yours… and isn’t that what it’s all about?

    Thanks,

    Hey Michael,

Successful people never quit. Sometimes people offline mainly old school friends and family as me how I am so sure that I will be a successful entrepreneur.

The first is that I just believe it, the second is that I will never quit so there is only way that I can go. Progress is made everyday, sometimes small and sometimes big but always in the right direction. The third thing is am so convinced that I will succeed that I stopped paying my pension.

    The future is bright!

Its great to be off this mindset.

    Thanks for sharing your post.
    Beth :)

    Michael,
Thanks for making the point that network marketing is not the only business where only 3% succeed. It is true in nearly every industry I bet, since like you and Napoleon Hill said “you have to have a burning desire to succeed”. Unfortunately only 3% of people have it while the rest really just don’t have a clue.
I believe it is through self development that you gain your burning desire so thanks for your strong focus on promoting self development.
It’s neat to hear from someone who achieved success with a job and learned that that wasn’t really success at all! Congrats for discovering your burning desire!

Thanks for your comments Andrew. Interesting you brought up your wife and her marathon. Years ago I wanted to run a marathon, why because my sister had done it. While this is not even close to your wife’s reason but it was mine. I sustain an injury prior to the Houston marathon I couldn’t participate but I did not want to lose all that training so months later I ran and finished the LA marathon.

    I appreciate your birthday wishes,

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

Wise words indeed. We fail because most of the time we just can. With nobody to chase and chide us it’s easy to slink off and give something else a go. How different it is when you have no only your own burning desire to carry you forward, but the hopes and expectations of others too!

Business aside, my wife Joanna, ran the London Marathon this year and raised over $5000 for a cancer charity. With 5 weeks to go before the event, she was on crutches after sustaining a serious muscle tear.

She was never going to give up and felt honour-bound to do her best. Which she did and completed the race in a respectable time. Her mind was set and would not be defeated. I find this inspirational and I’m bringing this type of belief to my business. Like you, I scaled the heights within corporations – although not to CEO – and wasn’t sure I liked the view.

Now I’ve chosen to do it differently. To be more,

Thanks as ever for your wisdom.

    Regards,

    Andrew
    PS – Happy Birthday!

  22. Michael Berry August 24, 2010 7:31 am #

You’re right on Rob. And another point to that is that all of us that have become very successful have failed many, many times but we still had the burning desire.

    Thanks for your insight,

    Michael

  23. Rob Franta August 24, 2010 6:14 am #

Great topic Michael, here is another great piece of missed information.

On average people fail at most everything they try, this is not limited network marketing. We as a society fail at more things than we succeed. Your reasons are exactly why and they cross over to any failure.

We fail to loose weight, we fail to complete tasks, we fail to complete our education, we fail to improve our health. The list goes on and on.

Another reason this failure rate seems high is because so many people give it a try due to the low start up cost. If these same people that failed at network marketing, spent 100k to open a brick and mortar business I would imagine they would fail at that as well.

Anyone can succeed at anything, they are only limited by their own thoughts, emotions, desires and the ability to educate themselves to have the knowledge it takes to succeed.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Rob
