Personal Development Simplified

When I think of personal development the one thing that comes up for me is that people tend to over complicate it. Personal development is really simple to me, but I also tend to over complicate it from time to time. Being a student of personal development is, in my words:

  1. First and foremost in personal developmentt you must believe without reservation that you are creating your life through your thoughts and take complete responsibility for it. If you don’t, then you should stop reading this now and find some supporting documentation to reinforce this belief. http://prosperyourmind.blog.com/2010/05/17/you-are-what-you-think/
  2. In personal development you believe you were created in the image of the creator (God or whatever your belief). Thusly you believe you can create anything in time. You can create your goals.
  3. In personal development you are grateful for what you have right now and what you will have in the future (your goals). http://prosperyourmind.blog.com/2010/05/04/gratitude/
  4. In personal development you train your mind to think positive thoughts. If you have a negative thought you replace it immediately with a positive thought. You do not allow outside negative environments into your life. (Such as watching the news.) http://prosperyourmind.blog.com/2010/04/19/how-do-i-stop-my-negative-thoughts-2/
  5. In personal development you learn to be very present . I call it living in the NOW. You observe and do not judge. http://prosperyourmind.blog.com/2010/05/14/being-in-the-now/
  6. Finally, in personal development you work harder on yourself and your thoughts than any one thing.

Personal development is our business and our life,

I am a former CEO of a company and then owned my own consulting business. Over 9 years ago I made the decision that even though I was making that 6 figure income, I was not happy. I had a beautiful piece of property on Lake Conroe and a wonderful wife and I was never here to enjoy both. I had to find a way to stay home. I got involved in numerous multilevel marketing (MLM) programs and quite honestly lost a lot of money. A personal development company found me. Thank God it did. I am now able to be at home as much as I choose and truly enjoy the lifestyle I now have. Their program has taught me that I have the power to create anything in my life. And in fact we're now traveling all around California, staying on the beach to the mountains. This business is so portable, you just need the internet and a cell phone.

Yes me too Darlene. Working harder on yourself is it.

Thanks so much for your comments Beth. Wow since 11-12 being part of personal development, that’s great. I often wonder how different my life would have been if I discovered it sooner, but also I believe it was meant to be in my journey. Being the age I am 62 has allowed me to assist others because of the “baggage” I had.

    Thanks again,

    Michael

    Hi Michael~

Great points on what it takes to be a student of personal development. I have been an avid student since a very early age, around 11-12. My family is very active in the LifeSpring community (not called that anymore), and the trainings have allowed my family to communicate and prosper in ways that most families don’t.

You are absolutely right, you have to work harder on yourself than anything else. As the saying goes, “if you’re not growing, you’re dying.”

    Thanks for sharing. :)

  6. Darlene Davis September 13, 2010 5:42 pm #

    Michael,
Each one of your steps resonate with me, but the one that stands out above all else is “work harder on yourself and your thoughts than any one thing.” This is a phrase I repeat every morning. There is no greater investment than developing yourself. Thanks for the reminder:)

    Hey Michael,

Thanks for posting this article about personal development. It is true that you have to be in the Now and see what you can do right now. Also you should avoid negative thoughts.

    Ted

  8. Michael Berry September 13, 2010 8:16 am #

Way to go Kevin. Yes when you focus on the NOW you can not worry about the future.

    Thanks for your comments,

    Michael

  9. Michael Berry September 13, 2010 8:14 am #

Hey Laura you make a under of great points. It’s far easier for someone to blame their outside circumstances for their lack of success than to take responsibility because they have nothing to blame but themselves. They don’t want to go there.

    Thanks so much,

    Michael

  10. Michael Berry September 13, 2010 8:06 am #

Thanks Scott for all your comments. If I might say you are over complicating it a bit when you say “I see many people who focus so much on personal development that they forget that goals are only achieved if one actually takes the proper action.” You see inherent in taking responsibility means not only for your past but your future, which means taking action. Get the point?

    Thanks again,

    Michael

Yes Tommy living in the NOW is a biggie. I’m glad you were personally able to sort through it. Thank you so much for your comment on me providing value to the community for personal development. I appreciate that.

    Michael,

The points you made are so powerful.

I have learned to live in the ‘NOW’. There were times in my
life when I was always looking ahead to things to come. All that
time I was wasting valuable time in my life. It was a true wake up
call and it is great to understand such value especially in this post.

I always enjoy reading your blog, thank you for the personal development
    that you provide.

    Have a great one!
    Tommy D.

    Hey Michael,

Personal Development really is quite simple as you said, you just need to focus on growing yourself and an entrepreneur. Pick up a new book every day and read through as much of it as you possibly can.

  15. Teach Jim September 11, 2010 9:32 pm #

Personal development really is inside out creativity. Thank you for the reminder. It is interesting when people begin to dream again when they are told they can succeed as they join a network marketing opportunity they start to grow again.

I love the idea of developing people and a business at the same time. “Personal Development with a Pay Check” Not to bad. That is what happened to my son. Great story…

  16. Scott Manesis September 11, 2010 8:33 pm #

    Michael,

I too am a big fan of personal development and think it should be a part of a good plan toward achieving ones goals. Unfortunately, I see many people who focus so much on personal development that they forget that goals are only achieved if one actually takes the proper action. Mindset is only half of the battle, no matter how much we think about writing an article or doing a video…. it won’t get done unless we get off our butts and actually do it.

That being said, this is an excellent post and a very nice blog. Keep up the good work my friend.

    Scott Manesis

  17. Laura Paulson September 11, 2010 5:42 pm #

Very well said Michael and it IS simple.

Your statement “….take complete responsibility for it” reminds me of someone I know who is ALWAYS blaming everything and anything for what’s not right in his life. And I just think, how terrible it must be to go through life with that self-limiting belief. For some, it may seem easier to blame someone else but talk about lack of control – no thank you!

I really like the “living in the NOW” – that is so important. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come. Yes, plan for the future but live for Today! What can you do NOW!

    Good stuff!

  18. Kevin Martineau September 11, 2010 4:11 pm #

In personal development you learn to be very present . I call it living in the NOW. You observe and do not judge.

Great point! This is something that I have been focussing on a lot lately.

  19. Michael Berry September 11, 2010 7:28 am #

Yes the rest is a waste Linnea because that’s where it all starts and ends.

Thanks so much for your comments,

Hey Rick your last statement really sums up the way I feel. “Personal development really is underrated and needs to be accepted as a necessary part of every positive thing in our lives.” It is THE WAY, THE SECRET in my opinion and as noted by all great leaders.

    Thanks for your comments,

    Michael

  21. Michael Berry September 11, 2010 7:23 am #

You are right on Ayanna. I especially like your last statement “I truly believe that often our level of success is in line with where we are in our personal growth.”

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments,

    Michael

  22. Ayanna Mitchell September 10, 2010 10:47 pm #

Thank you so much for this post. It reminds me that there are people in the world who see things I see them. Personal development is so key to success. In order to obtain success professionally/in business we must first develop Me, Inc. For when much is given – much is required. In order to handle all that is given – we must be in the right mind in which to handle it. I truly believe that often our level of success is in line with where we are in our personal growth.

It really is important that people read this article Michael. We really do need to take full responsibility for our thoughts and what we create with our true beliefs. What we believe is what allows us to take time to do and it’s what’s in our subconscious that moves us forward. If we feed negative things in our subconscious over years it’s hard to recover. If we never learn how to achieve our goals then we give up easily and blame others. Personal development really is underrated and needs to be accepted as a necessary part of every positive thing in our lives. Thanks for a great post Michael.

  24. Linnea September 10, 2010 7:57 pm #

    Hi Michael,

Ditto Rafael’s comment. As I read your post the thing that came first and foremost to my mind was that if you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, the rest is a waste. Really good stuff on personal development. Thanks.

  25. Michael Berry September 10, 2010 5:04 pm #

The truth is Kyle that people that do not want to take complete responsibility are just not ready for it. They’re not ready to face that they are a cause in their lives. I don’t blame them or get frustrated, I just find it interesting.

    Thanks for your comments,

    Michael

    Michael,

You and I are kindred spirits, as I’ve spent the last 15 years studying personal development and am quite fanatic about it. It is pretty cool stuff. When I read Anthony Robbins first book way back when, it really impacted me. From then on, I have been a junkie for it. I have bookmarked your blog and would love to chat with you sometime.

    Cheers,
    Mike

  28. Michael Berry September 8, 2010 1:15 pm #

Yes Kyle it can be frustrating but I choose to look at it a little differently. They’re are just taking the easy way out. If you can’t blame something or someone else for your shortcomings than guess what? You have to blame yourself and that’s very tough for them to swallow.

    Thanks for your comments,

    Michael

  29. Michael Berry September 8, 2010 12:54 pm #

Those are kind words indeed Tamra comparing me to Jim Rohn. Yes everyone should start with personal development before they ever consider a home based business. Thank you so much for your comments.

    Michael

  30. Tamra September 8, 2010 11:42 am #

    Michael,

You sound a lot like Jim Rohn…lol But it is a good thing. For years I failed cause I thought it was a waste of time for personal development, show me the fundamental and I can run with it from there.

It wasn’t until my mentor suggest that I listen to Jim Rohn and read Think and Grow Rich, did I realize that the one thing I was avoiding was the one piece of the puzzle I needed to push forward and believe in what I am doing… to help others avoid the same mistakes while starting a home base business.

I found my new favorite blog to continue with my personal development.

    Thank you for sharing!

    Tamra

I don’t know how frustrating it is to work with people who won’t take complete responsibility for their own life! Excuses run rampant all around us, and someone who takes personal development seriously, and doesn’t make excuses is SUCH a refreshing person!

    Thanks for sharing this Michael!

    Hi Michael,

What a wonderful blog. It’s so simple but powerful, and really, someone could just work on it one number at a time. It’s hard not to become overwhelmed when what used to only be available in the library is now at our fingertips 24/7. You also have a beautiful wife, and I love your dog! There was a dog like that in my neighborhood when I was growing up named — Red!

Wishing you a song in your heart,

    Hi Michael,

You have some great points on what personal development consists of. The point that hits home for me is the need to work hard on myself and to do it more than any one thing.

I truly believe that no matter the dollars you spend on advertising and marketing for your buisness, their is no better investment that YOU!

    Keep encouraging,

    Rafael
